Michael
Corner was born in Hamilton Ontario in 1958 and has lived most of his life
here. He attended Sir Allan MacNab High School, then Mohawk College,
enrolled in a one year business program. Serving in the Canadian Armed
Forces for three years on Naval deployment after schooling, he was
Honourably Discharged and sought work as a professional truck driver. Now,
with almost three million kilometres driving accident free, he still
maintains his skills with local work in the transportation industry.
In December of 2000, at the age of forty-three, he joined Karate as a white belt at McGlashon's Martial Arts Academy, and continues to study diligently to this day.
In June of 2004, upon receiving the coveted rank of Shodan (1st Degree Black Belt) in just three and a half years of training, he opened his own Dojo (place of study) in the same building as he lived and worked. His school, Mountain Martial Arts had 14 students.
Corner Sensei has competed in local and regional tournaments with close to fifty trophies, medals and awards during his progression from white to black belt. His biggest accomplishment however, has been winning the Bronze Medal for the Ontario Region in 2003 with the W.K.A. (World Karate Association). He was only a Blue Belt at the time.
Mountain Martial Arts' first tournament was in St. Catharines, Ontario, where Corner Sensei had several of his students take home "hardware" from unsuspecting competitors of rival schools. It's nice to see success being passed on from teacher to pupil. Mountain Martial Arts is already becoming noticed in tournament circles.
Corner Sensei credits his knowledge and learned skills to his past Teachers: Sensei Michael McGlashon, Sensei Doug Meagher, Sensei Rusty McMains Shihan Isao Yabunaka and Shihan Ramon Veras, President of POGKF (Pan American Okinawan GojuRyu Karate-Do Federation), to which Corner Sensei and several of his students are Lifetime Members.
At his Stoney Creek home in August 2007, Corner Sensei school was accepted as a Chartered Branch of ShoSeiKan, headquartered in Japan. At this time he was graded to the rank of Sandan (3rd Degree Black Belt) and was given the Title Shidoin (Instructor). It had been less than two years since his last promotion! Shidoin Corner continues to teach and train seriously.
